Your skin has a different job in the day than it does at night. A simple guide to what each routine is really for.
People often use the same products morning and night and wonder why their skin never quite settles. The fix is simpler than another purchase. It is understanding that day and night ask two different things of your skin.
Daytime is about protection
Through the day, your skin is defending: against light, pollution, weather and the small stresses of being out in the world. So your morning routine should be about shielding and supporting. Lightweight hydration that holds through the day, antioxidants where they suit you, and, without exception, sunscreen as the final step. The morning is not the time for your most aggressive actives. It is the time to protect what you have.
Night-time is about repair
Overnight, the job flips. Freed from daytime defence, skin turns to repair and renewal, and it does so most actively while you sleep. This is when richer textures and renewal ingredients earn their place, and when a barrier-replenishing cream can work uninterrupted. Wake, and skin has quietly done a night's work.
Protect through the day. Repair through the night. Almost every good routine is a variation on those two sentences.
Putting it together
- Morning: cleanse, hydrate with something weightless, protect with SPF.
- Evening: cleanse, treat with your renewal step, repair with something richer.
- Let the two routines specialise. They are not meant to be identical.
A lightweight, multi-molecular day cream and a ceramide-rich night cream are, between them, most of a complete routine. Two products, two jobs, done well.
